imageThis debut novel does not shy away from anything! It tells the story of Rina Walker, gun for hire, as she starts on a job in Acapulco. It doesn’t start too well as she wakes to find her new employers severed head on the pillow next to her.

She escapes but only temporarily, she’s quickly captured by a Mexican drug dealer. It seems she’s been lured to Mexico to eliminate the Minister of Justice. But as this new mission begins there are more twists and turns. Rina has to keep a cool head if she is going to get back to London to sort out her sister’s problems.

In fact it is her love for her family that led to her career, every other chapter flashes back from 1974 to 1956 – where Rina is 15 and her sister is in danger. She defends her, leading to the death of a local gangster. It’s the step that sets her life on an irreversible course.

I was lucky to recieve a free copy of this in return for an honest review. I completely fangirled when it came through the letterbox, I’m a huge fan of the Poirot adaptations on TV and have had a soft spot for Captain Hastings since I was a teenager – and suddenly I’ve got his first novel in my hands! I took myself off to a quiet spot and started reading. By the end of the first chapter I was more than a little worried. This just wasn’t going to be my kind of book.

It read like a Hollywood Blockbuster – all stilettoes and guns. Rina seemed more like a Bond villain than a real character, and I’m a very character driven reader.

But then I started reading chapter two and by half way through it I started to understand Rina. Her motivations made perfect sense and the path she ended up on completely plausible. Then I started to enjoy the roller coaster! And it really is a heck of a ride, there are so many twists and turns in the Mexican storyline and so much heart-wrenching emotion in the Notting Hill storyline that it’s unputtdownable. I hope Hollywood do come calling for this book because it would make a heck of a blockbuster!

I was reading before I started school and I have no plans to stop now! I usually have at least two books on the go at once, one non-fiction and one fiction. I like reading books based in reality that flick open the doors to the mysteries of the heart or of the spirit.
